Daniel Knapp, LPC-Intern
Supervised by Kimberly May, LPC-S, LMFT
What is your educational background?
I received my bachelor’s degree in Medical Sciences and Psychology in 2012. I received my Master of Counseling in 2017 and I am a Licensed Professional Counselor-Intern, under the supervision of Kimberly May, LPC-S, LMFT.
What is your work experience?
For the last 3 years I’ve worked at the local mental health authority, Integral Care, in various roles from being a crisis prevention specialist for those with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities to working with the Mobile Crisis Outreach Team and Psychiatric Emergency Services. Prior to this I worked at the Austin State Hospital.
What is your rate?
A 50-minute session is $90.00. However, now more than ever, it is important that mental health services are accessible. Therefore, all my appointments are eligible for sliding scale. Contact me for more information.
How do I reach you directly?
You can reach me at 512.200.2044 or send me an email at Dan.Knapp@substanceusetherapy.com. I look forward to hearing from you.
What interests you about substance use?
Substance use work is both challenging and intriguing. My stance on harm reduction is that it seems to be one of the most realistic approaches to substance use and I am eager to work collaboratively with people whose lives have been impacted by substance use.
What other areas of expertise do you have?
I have many years of experience with the LGBTQ+ population as a gay male and as a clinician. Working to support this population to better express themselves and find their identity has been an incredible experience.
Helping people to develop and hone coping skills to better manage the stresses of life is something I am passionate about.
What is your approach to therapy?
I am a firm believer of person-centered treatment and I have a background in cognitive behavioral and solution focused therapy. I like to boil it down to what each person needs and building on unique strengths and interests.
Ok, how about some random facts about yourself…
I was a Boy Scout throughout my childhood and early adult life and I still love camping, being a unique character and wilderness survival. This makes me a big fan of traveling and seeing new things. I also used to be an EMT, a server/bartender and a brand promotion specialist so I like to think I have somewhat of an eclectic background.
